The mountains of Minca. Editor’s Note: The following is a guest post by Dock, a former radio DJ in the US, and now English teacher in Medellín. It’s not the kind of place that comes to mind when thinking about Colombia, but a little mountain village called Minca gets my vote for best of honors.

It’s not the kind of place that comes to mind when thinking about Colombia, but a little mountain village called Minca gets my vote for best of honors. A slow 17 kilometers up and out of dusty Santa Marta, the route climbs relentlessly through increasingly lush terrain. For my trumpet, trombone, baritone and euphonium students.

Minca is a small picturesque town of just five hundred inhabitants, nestled in the lush vegetation and loved by visitors for the bird watching, walking alongside bubbling rivers and waterfalls, horse riding and sampling organic coffee. Minca is an ecological paradise with its crystalline rivers and dense green vegetation.

Here, temperatures are cooler than in Santa Marta and nature is abundant. Why women are more affected by MINOCA remains another part of the mystery. Researchers suspect that female hormones may cause a weakening or dysfunction of the inside lining of heart arteries, making them more susceptible to atherosclerosis spasms, but more research needs to be done. Minca Minca is a small village inhabited by 800 people at an elevation of 650m in the Sierra Nevada above Santa Marta. It is famous for its organic coffee and has a much cooler temperature than the sweltering Santa Marta. The village is charming, and has in the past few years grown as a traveler and birdwatching destination.
